3 Steps for Using Scripture in Your Manuscript

The writing tip I’ll share with you today is about documentation.
What’s documentation? It’s also called citation and means telling your reader where you got your Scripture quotation.
Here’s an example of a sentence you might find in a manuscript:
We find in Scripture, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might” (Ephesians 6:10 NASB).
The information after the quotation in parentheses is called parenthetical documentation.
Let’s look at the three parts to that example sentence.
- Introductory phrase: We find in Scripture,
- Quotation: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might”
- Parenthetical documentation: (Ephesians 6:10 NASB).
You use this three part process each time you include a Scripture reference.
